Anna M. Caballero

Anna Caballero is the first woman and Latina Mayor in the 136 year history of the City of Salinas. She has recently been elected to her third term of office. Prior to this she served for seven years on the Salinas City Council, including four years as Vice-Mayor. She is a strong advocate for affordable
housing, redevelopment of the downtown, and a focus on providing public recreational spaces for teens and families. She is committed to ensuring that Salinas is a safe and peaceful community.

In the private sector, she opened the law offices of Caballero, Matcham & Mc Carthy in 1982 with the goal of providing legal representation at a modest price. She has been honored with the "Athena" award for entrepreneurial excellence by the Salinas Area Chamber of Commerce. In 2000 the Monterey County Lawyers Association awarded Mayor Caballero the prestigious June Gibson Award for bringing distinction to the legal profession through a commitment to public service.

Through "MANA," an association of Mexican American Women, she has raised scholarships for young women continuing on to higher education. Mayor Caballero has been honored as an entrepreneur and role model by groups such as the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the ZONTA Club of Salinas, the California Commission on the Status of Women and the Monterey County Commission on the Status of Women.

Mayor Caballero now serves as Executive Director of Partners for Peace, an organization whose goal is developing effective violence prevention strategies and forging partnerships which share community resources to provide a higher quality of life for all Salinas residents.
