Jan Lewis, M.A, R.D.

Jan Lewis is a Nutrition Education Consultant for the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division and is responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, and promotion of nutrition education in child care agencies and public and private schools, preschool through grade 12. She coordinates the USDA Team Nutrition Initiative, works with educators and child nutrition professionals to promote nutrition education in the classroom and cafeteria, promotes the comprehensive SHAPE (Shaping Health As Partners in Education) California nutrition approach, writes grants, and monitors nutrition education contracts. (Assumed position in January 2001.)

From 1997 to 2001, Ms. Lewis worked as a Public Health Nutrition Consultant III for the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) as the team leader/supervisor of Community Development Team, California Nutrition Network. She directly negotiated and monitored over 30 community-based nutrition education projects and supervised monitoring of 160 local contracts.

Ms. Lewis has also worked as a nutritionist for CDHS’s Breast Cancer Detection Section and the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Prior to 1993, she was in private practice as a registered dietitian and taught nutrition at the community college level for more than 13 years.
